Melissa spent several years pursuing a science career before deciding it would be fun to write fiction. It turns out that there is even more research involved in writing, but luckily that’s one of her favourite things. She enjoys combining facts that seem fantastical with actual fantasy, and creating quirky characters with a sense of humour. When she’s not trying to figure out how a volcano demigod would cope in a non-geothermically active country, she is feeding her ever-increasing backyard menagerie (or trying to convince her children that the family really doesn’t need another kitten), chasing chickens out of the garden, or taking photographs of whatever will stand still (so mostly plants). She spends far too much time looking at climate change predictions.

Melissa Gunn writes YA urban fantasy/climate fiction crossover and speculative fiction stories. Under the name Melissa R Gunn she writes science-related educational books for kids.
